"PEER PRESSURE"-A thing of Past

How many times have you come across articles on,"teens","Students","freshers"or even adults(political parties, trade unions) for that matter without using the term-"peer pressure".Not many, isn't it.

While talking about kids or teens, ill habits like reluctance towards studies, stress, exam fever,short-temper are attributed to peer pressure. When you talk of adults-drinking,smoking,cheating,eavesdropping,double-crossing.etc are attributed to peer pressure.

But ideally,at least in todays scenario, should there be any peer pressure at all?

Two sides of the coin
Our parents,as students had very few choices when it came to choosing their stream of studies and making a career out of it.Bachelors in science and arts was a safe bet.Engineers,Doctors,Lawyers,Bankers were the esteemed lot.It was considered abysmally wrong if anyone were to try for non-government jobs.

But things have changed now.Irrespective of your stream of study, getting a job is no big deal if you can inculcate the so-called soft skills or at least pretend to be so.The market demand, globally, for young minds is on an all-time high that students have the liberty of choosing b/w taking up job in their dream company or to pursue higher studies. The avenues are wide open.

Why follow the herd??

This being ,the case why do still feel the pressure. The
answer is simple. Our society has taught us a lot of quick-fix techniques to escape criticism.Despite a wide pool of career options. Most of us confine ourselves to IT/ITES,Medicine,Banking.etc to name a few.An aspiring athlete, painter or actor would be nipped in the bud ,fearing the taboos of the society. We bury deep our own interests, wishes and just follow the herd in the name of playing it safe. But,with time, when we don't enjoy what we do,somewhere down the line, the chronic underlying dislike or discomfort resurfaces,no matter how much we try to dump it within us.Finally we feel the stress.

"Its no more a question of commanding respect for what you are.Rather,we demand respect when we make career choices based on others(parents, relatives, friends) conviction"

"Its not a question of need that bogs us down. Its all about greed of what others are onto".

"we yearn to earn rather than to abide by or imbibe what we l
earn".

Somebody coin a new term!!

As of now,I assume that its quite clear that we all misuse the term "peer pressure".So I leave it to the readers to come up with a new term for peer pressure keeping in mind the above discussion

Tuesdays with Morrie-A fabulous book

HOW DID I GET TO KNOW ABOUT THE BOOK??
One Tuesday morning,i was yawning, flipping through the tv channels reluctantly.Eventually i saw Director Vasanth's interview. It was only about to get over when he mentioned about the book he read recently and strongly recommended this book to all he met. Moreover,he quoted Dr.Manmohan Singh, who also contemplated everyone on reading the book.

Since i was vetti to core, got the book from a lending library. To
my astonishment i got so engrossed dat i finished the book at a stretch in 6hrs.

GIST OF THE STORY
Plot
Though not a story as such, the author,Mitch Albom has written this book in the way of paying tribute for his late professor(Morrie),a sociologist.During his college days,Mitch shared a great rapport with Morrie.Morrie had opened up Mitch as he felt very comfortable to share everything with his professor. At farewell,Mitch had promised his "coach"(as he used to call him) to keep in touch ..But he never lived up to it.

After 16 yrs......

In the quest to carve a niche for himself,Mitch always swept his thoughts about his professor under his carpet.Sixteen years rolled by until he came to know of the deteriorating health of his professor dying of a disease called ALS.Struck with a sense of guilt,Mitch makes a desperate visit at his professors'.

They were Tuesday people

After sharing pleasantries on their reunion Mitch was overwhelmed by the same humility and fondness with which his coach received him. Mitch felt very bad for not having met his mentor for so long and decided to compensate by meeting him every Tuesday,in the way of replenishing their college time custom.

The 14 Tuesdays
Morrie had two choices-either to get worried of dying or accept things as it is and make the last few days of his life meaningful. He met his friends, students and in fact the whole world through media and made everyone understand what he was going through. He won a million of hearts.

Meanwhile,Morrie met up with Mitch every Tuesday and they would talk on different topics.
This final class is on meaning of life, topics include the world, feeling sorry for yourself, regrets, death, family, emotions, aging, money, love, marriage, culture, forgiveness, and saying goodbye.

Mitch was always conservative when it comes to showing his emotions. His coach always would say that its okay to cry.But Mitch never felt the need for it.On the final Tuesday Morrie got Mitch crying.

Touching lines
Morrie managed to scribe off his experience in the form of short aphorism which has the essence a whole lot of self-improvement books. Also,he passed on his legacy to his most deserved student.

'
Don’t cling to things, because everything is impermanent’.

‘Detachment doesn’t mean you don’t let the experience penetrate you. On the contrary, you let it penetrate you fully'.

'When you're confined to the bed,you are dead'.

'Love is something you cherish. If you don't love each other, then perish'.

In his final days Morrie gave as an adult(his philosophies) and took as a child(Morrie deteriorated from the size of a man to a boy suffering from ALS which had no cure)

'Everyday in the morning i mourn for the part of my body that has failed to function, may be shed a few tears and then move on with it'.

'Once I am gone you come to my grave every Tuesday. Then you do the talking and I'll listen to you'.

Morrie & Mitch(original) (Movie)

IMPACT ON ME
I was really moved to tears.I made it a point to visit my grandparents everyday and I'm already doing it.My perspective of life has changed starkly.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

It's truly unfair to dedicate a single day out of 365 to express our warmth to our mothers.I still can't quite give in to it.For someone who has been so selfless in raising us they deserve much more.Love ur parents as much as u can.Don't wait for an occasion to express ur love.A gentle hug or a kiss will do a world a lot of gud rather than trying to express ur love through materialistic things.

Invest ur time in relations...U ll reap the benefits for generations

DA VINCI CODE vs DASAVATHARAM

Dr.Kamalahasan's recent flick Dasavatharam is undoubtedly the much awaited film of the year. It's gonna be a massive hit because every controversial film of his has turned out to be a box office hit.And Dasavatharam is no exception. From what little info we are able to discern from the trailer & buzz around kollywood. One could make a plausible guess that the film is about make both ends meet-mythology and science & technology. The script, like the the most critically acclaimed Da Vinci Code has created a stir among the Hindu spiritualists and religionists.

Considering the fact that the actor himself has penned the script besides playing different characters, one must marvel this man's intellect. When people boast of dual roles, its beyond a layman's imagination the amount of creativity, knowledge , hard work and commitment that it takes right from conceiving the ideas and bring it out with perfection through getups, modulation etc.Song sequences must be a compromise keeping in mind the expectations of the local audience.

Its always difficult to produce a film that is critically acclaimed as well as a box office hit.But this man having proved his critics wrong time and again, haven't lost his appetite for success and eventualy creates milestones and breaks the myths.Hats off to Dr.Kamalahasan.Advance wishes for the entire Dasavatharam crew

Take Care of ur Pc's-Trivial yet Useful

Do you get days where you feel like tearing your hair out, because your Pc will not operate in the manner which it did when you first bought it.Believe me you are not alone, this happens to most of us, especially if your Pc is a few years old and you have not given it the maintenance it requires. Pcs need to be kept in good condition and from time to time they have to be given a good clean out.
I shall give you the steps which you need to carry out approximately once per month. These steps will help keep your Pc running well and efficiently. Most of the steps below are easy to perform and will work wonders for your Pc. Make sure you perform each task at least once per month. If your Pc is over a year old and youhave not carried out any kind of maintenance, the process could take some hours to complete. Don’t worry, once you have carried out these tasks for the first time, it should take only around half an hour the next time you maintain your Pc.

1.EMPTY RECYCLE BINS

The first thing to do is empty your recycle bin, this may seem obvious, but it is surprising how many people let the recycle bin clog up withunwanted files. When you delete a file, it is stored in the recycle binfolder, this gives you the chance to restore it later if you wish. Keepingthese files takes up hard disc space, so if you no longer require them, delete them by simply right clicking on the recycle bin icon on yourdesktop and selecting “empty recycle bin” from the drop down menu.

2.UNINSTALL UNUSED PROGRAMS

Over a period of time you will have loaded many programs from cd discs and from the internet. You will most likely have many programs which you no longer use. These programs are taking valuable hard disc space and need to be deleted. You need to go through all your installed programs and delete the ones you no longer require.

3.DISC CLEANUP

This feature is included in the Windows system and a disk cleanupshould be performed regularly. To access disk cleanup go to your startmenu, programs, accessories, system tools then select disk cleanup from the drop down menu.

After a short time disk cleanup will have scanned your Pc.Make sure you tick the Temporary Internet Files box. Everytime you view a web page the page is stored in this folder. If you have never deleted the contents of this folder before, you will have a huge amount of files saved in there taking up a massive amount of your hard disc space. Deleting the contents of this folder will work wonders for your internet surfing, it should be faster. Now let’s do a Defrag.

4.DEFRAGGING THE HARD DISC

The reason we need to defragment is because when a program is stored on the hard drive the fragments of files can get split up. When you use a program your Pc has to search and find all the fragments and join the whole lot together, which slows down the speed of your Pc. Defragmenting finds all these files and puts them in their correct place, making the program open much faster, putting less strain on your Pc.

To carry out a defragment, go to your start menu as before, programs, accessories, system tools and select disk defragment from the dropdown menu. Now click the defragment button and leave it to complete the process. This can take hours if you have not done it before, doing it everymonth will help speed the process up, the amount of time it takes will depend on the size of your hard drive.

5.EMPTY THE PREFETCH CACHE

The prefetch cache is something which is overlooked by most. Trying to improve the time it takes a program to load, the windows system guesses which files will be required next; these are loaded into a cache. This action is known as prefetching. Over a period of time the prefetch cache can become loaded with files which are no longer used. When this happens it can slow down windows on start up.

Emptying this cache can help speed your Pc on start up. To do this, click run in the start up menu and type “Prefetch” in the run box which appears, click ok.The result is a window with numerous icons. Paste over the icons anddelete. The cache is now ready to resume its work and will begin to refill with files and links as required. Doing this will improve the response of your Pc.

6.SYSTEM REGISTRY

The system registry is where all your windows settings are stored, these settings change every time you add a program. There are literally thousands of entries which control your Pc and the way it behaves. Every time you install or uninstall a program there are small traces of the program left behind. You are eventually left with entries which will never be used, unused drivers and maybe spyware and other malicious programs. All this leads to a slow Pc. I would not advise tampering with the registry as this is a very complicated area if you don’t know what you are doing. I would recommend using Registry cleaning software. One of the better ones is Registry Fix which includes a free scan .If you are going to use one of the programs above, do this after you have carried out all the other steps. This will complete the process andyour computer will run in tip top form. I have a tip for you below:

Another Tip

It is always worth adding more memory to your computer. Some computers really do need an extra boost in the memory department. If you are running Windows Xp, you will need a minimum of 256mb of RAM, even this may put a strain on your system if you are running any
kind of graphics or games. Upgrading to a 512mb card will really speed up the processing power, if you have a laptop you can upgrade to 1024mb on some models and this makes a huge difference to the speed of your computer.

7.FAQ'S
I’m a raw beginner with computers, what can I do?
If you are new to computers, or you just don’t understand any of the technical jargon there is a software package that will do everything for you. The software is reasonably priced for what it offers. You get full internet support for the product, their staff will answer any of your questions very quickly. You can see from the caption below whatfeatures the software offers.

ANNA UNIVERSITY RESULTS-MY WORST NIGHTMARE

The believers of KARMA would say that one gets deservedly punished for their sins. One’s horrified and guilty mind is culpable of conjuring various modes of punishment, both in lines of mythological realm (hell or perdition) as well as mundane. In hell, most people believe sinners are drowned in a cauldron of boiling oil or tied to bed of nails while being bitten by huge wasps, scorpions, etc.Nevertheless, there are some tailor-made modes of punishments on earth with the former as a blueprint. According to my analysis, the most ruthless form of torture is awaiting for Anna University results. The onlookers feel that the candidates get to hone their skills and broaden their spectrum of knowledge by the way of going through the rigors of these exams. But they are only to be mistaken.

Leave alone the scheduling of the examination, the real agony spurs only when the exams get over. Day by day the pressure mounts and the candidate tends to lose his peace of mind. He desperately tries to stall the wheels of time in an attempt divert his mind. But all in vain. In a fit of panic he recollects all the sins that he had committed (racketing around in class, poor show in monthlies, attendance lag) and associates with the possibility of getting very mean internal marks. He spends sleepless nights, gets out of the bed to take a quick glance at the question papers, crosscheck them with books and starts self-evaluation with all permutations and combinations. Moreover, he rings up to his friends, staffs in search of solace or soothing words .His face turns grim when his friend claims to have done well. Also rumors of all sorts like-mere attempt, questions out of syllabuses add salt to the wound.

The blame game starts as he criticizes the staffs for not having taught the questions in class, the examiner for the reckless scheduling, electricity board for frequent power cuts, his parents or neighbors or siblings for watching TV, the weather Gods for sudden rains or scorching sun, relatives for their unexpected visits, the invigilator for wasting time in the name of verification. The list is endless and he gives them all a big damn.

As the days close in, one’s trepidation multiples that he get clouded with an array of doubts. All the philosophical quotes flash in his mind. He starts to believe in destiny.Notwithstanding, he becomes a regular at temples, a sense of apathy creeps in and he wove to give his best in the next semester.

The adrenalin rush will be at its peak when the results get published, after a few rounds of romour. Moreover, it sometimes take light-years for the page to load. People will be glued in front of their pc's in a feverish meditation, chanting prayers, probing on what is in store. There is a hell a lot of bloggers who don’t remove the previous semester results, thereby contributing to the agony.

A day after the results, people start empathizing or sympathizing among them depending upon the magnitude of their impact. The day will be observed as a black-day in the way of mourning for the victims of the disaster. The revaluation procedure can be compared to something like the Duck worth-Lewis system in cricket. A super selector would fail to predict it.

Having gone through this grind, twice every academic year, some of them stand testimony to the saying” When the going gets tough, the tough gets going”. While many succumb to pressure. Fortunately or unfortunately, the meritorious lot gets all the accolades while the rest undergo scrutiny. Being a final year student, I am no exception!!
